When I accepted a nanny position in Lorenzo’s mansion, I expected difficult children, not a mystery. His eight-year-old twins, Matteo and Marco, were constantly tired, losing weight, and struggling to concentrate. Their father had already taken them to specialist after specialist, and every doctor insisted they were searching for answers. Dr. Preston Vaughn, their private physician, seemed especially confident that nothing unusual was happening. He told me not to interfere with medical decisions and reminded me that I was hired to care for the boys, not diagnose them.
But I watched things doctors never saw. Both boys became noticeably worse after bedtime. They complained of headaches, woke exhausted, and sometimes seemed almost confused. During the day, especially when we left the house, they improved slightly. I started keeping notes of their meals, sleep, symptoms, and where they spent their time. One hallway bothered me most. The boys refused to walk through it after dark, saying the air smelled strange.
One night, while changing the linens in the twins’ rooms, I noticed something behind a vent. It was a small electronic device connected to the ductwork. I had no idea what it was, but I knew enough to understand that it did not belong there. I reached toward it, then stopped. Instead, I took photographs. What I found next made me realize this was far more than a broken ventilation system.
