The Mysterious Green Object a Stranger Gave Him2

The stranger told the driver that the little gourd had personal meaning to him. It was not simply something he had purchased as a souvenir. He had kept it for years and believed it carried the blessings of his family. He explained that in Chinese tradition, the hulu can symbolize protection, health, longevity, and good fortune. He didn’t know whether the driver believed in such things, but he wanted him to accept it as a sincere thank-you for helping him when he had nowhere else to turn.

The driver tried to refuse, explaining that paying for a tank of fuel wasn’t a big deal. But the stranger insisted. He said that when someone helps you at a difficult moment, you should give something meaningful if you have it. He had little money that day, but he had the small green charm he had carried for years. Finally, the driver accepted it, realizing that refusing would only diminish the gesture the man was trying to make.

Later, the driver became curious about the object and wondered whether it was actually jade. Its exact value was impossible to determine from photographs alone, and its appearance didn’t prove that it was made from any particular precious stone. He eventually realized that the financial value wasn’t really the point. Whether the carving was valuable or inexpensive, the story behind it made the object special. It represented a moment when two strangers helped each other without knowing where the encounter would lead.

The driver had stopped that day simply because another person needed help. He never expected money, recognition, or a reward. Instead, he drove away carrying a mysterious green gourd and a story he would remember for years. Perhaps the charm was worth a great deal, or perhaps it wasn’t worth much at all. Either way, its greatest value came from the meaning attached to it. A small act of kindness had created an unexpected exchange, proving that sometimes the most memorable gifts aren’t valuable because of their price, but because of the human story behind them.
