A driver once stopped to help a stranded man who had run out of money for fuel. The stranger was clearly worried because he had no way to continue his journey, so the driver paid for his gas without asking for anything in return. It was a small act of kindness, and he expected nothing more than a simple thank-you. Before leaving, however, the grateful man reached into his belongings and handed him a small green carved object.
The driver stared at it, confused. He had never seen anything quite like it. Its unusual shape resembled a traditional Chinese hulu, or gourd, which is often associated with protection, health, longevity, and good fortune. The object appeared to be made from green stone, possibly jade, but its true material and value couldn’t be determined simply by looking at it. Then the stranger explained why he wanted him to have it.
