Should You Pay for Your Coworker’s Gas?2

A respectful way to keep the arrangement comfortable is to offer to contribute toward fuel or other expenses. You could suggest a weekly or monthly amount that feels reasonable for both of you. The goal isn’t necessarily to calculate every mile or expense, but to acknowledge that your coworker is giving you something valuable. A simple statement such as, “I really appreciate you driving me, and I’d like to contribute,” can start an honest conversation without making things awkward.

If they don’t want to accept money, there are plenty of other ways to show appreciation. You could occasionally buy them coffee or breakfast, give them a fuel gift card, or help with another practical expense. Small gestures can make a big difference when someone regularly goes out of their way to help you.

Ultimately, the exact gesture matters less than the thought behind it. What matters is making sure your coworker knows you recognize their time, fuel, and effort. A favor can remain enjoyable when both people feel respected and appreciated.

Being considerate also protects the relationship from unspoken resentment. Instead of assuming the ride will continue forever, have an occasional conversation about whether the arrangement still works for both of you. A little communication and gratitude can turn a simple daily favor into a comfortable arrangement that benefits everyone.
