The Wife Who Paid Off Her In-Laws’ Debt Right Before Her Husband Demanded She Become Their Maid

I let the silence linger before smiling, which was the last reaction Roman and his family expected. “Then all of you need to leave,” I said. Roman stared at me, while his mother’s sympathetic expression froze. He insisted that the house was his, but I placed a folder on the stone countertop and calmly told him he was wrong. Inside were the deed, renovation contracts, loan payoff records, and financial documents. Every important document carried the same name as the sole owner and payer: mine.

 

 

 

I explained that I had purchased the house in my name alone before our wedding, using my own money. The renovations had also been paid from my separate account. More importantly, the $180,000 I had contributed toward Roman’s family debt had never been a gift. I had a written loan agreement, signed by his parents when they desperately needed help. Roman had spent so much time planning how to leave me that he had never bothered checking the legal documents. Then his mother accused me of tricking them. I reminded her that weeks earlier, I had overheard them laughing about Roman marrying me for my money and planning to leave once the debt was gone. What they did not know was that I had already heard everything—and had quietly taken steps that would soon change their entire plan.
