At dawn Mara stood on the cliff above the harbor, watching the sea turn silver beneath a pale orange sky. Fishing boats rested near the shore, their ropes loose and quiet. Then she noticed something odd beyond the breakwater: long lines of waves crossed one another, forming perfect squares across the surface. Mara had seen photographs of square waves, but never one this large. She raised her camera and stepped closer to the cliff edge.
Below, the pattern grew wider and darker as two swells approached from different directions. Mara watched a small fishing boat enter the crossing waves. It rose sharply, vanished behind one swell, then reappeared at an angle that made her stomach tighten. The engine roared as its captain suddenly turned toward shore. Mara lowered her camera. Something was clearly wrong, and when the next wave lifted, she saw a dark shape moving beneath the boat again.
