Ocean Safety Guide: What To Do When You See Square Waves 2

Mara backed away from the cliff edge and grabbed the railing. The dark shape beneath the boat moved against the current, circling once before disappearing. A second later, the boat tilted hard, and its captain shouted for help. Mara ran toward the harbor office, where an old coast guard named Elias was studying the weather maps. She pointed toward the sea, breathless, and he immediately understood. “Cross sea,” he muttered, pulling a radio from a drawer. “Those waves can trap a boat between opposing currents.” He called the harbor patrol and ordered every nearby vessel to turn back. Then Elias saw something on his radar that made his face pale: the crossing pattern was moving toward the harbor entrance far faster than expected tonight.

Within minutes, the patrol boat reached the outer harbor, but the sea had changed. Waves struck from opposite sides, lifting the patrol boat and dropping it into deep troughs. The crew slowed down, following Elias’s instructions over the radio. Mara watched from the cliff as the boat captain pointed toward a narrow channel between two crossing swells. Suddenly, a larger swell rose between them, folding over the channel like a wall. The patrol boat climbed it, tipped sideways, and disappeared in spray. Mara gasped, but seconds later the vessel emerged upright. The captain had escaped the worst by turning directly into the next wave. Elias shouted that everyone on the shore must leave the water. Mara helped close the beach gate and direct tourists inland.

As evening approached, the sky darkened, and the square pattern spread farther along the coast. Elias explained that the crossing seas were being driven by distant storms, while local currents were pushing against them. Mara finally understood why the peaceful surface had been so deceptive. She helped Elias check the empty shoreline, collecting loose boards and warning anyone who wandered near the water. Then the radio crackled with an urgent message: the patrol boat had spotted another vessel farther offshore, drifting without power. Elias grabbed his jacket and prepared to launch the rescue skiff. Mara wanted to follow, but he shook his head. “You stay here and watch the harbor lights. If they disappear, call me immediately.” Mara nodded, though fear tightened her chest again.

She watched as Elias and two rescuers pushed the skiff into the water. The waves were still crossing, but the crew kept their course toward the stranded vessel. Mara held the radio tightly, listening to broken voices and bursts of static. After several tense minutes, Elias reported that they had reached the vessel and found an exhausted family trapped inside. They brought everyone aboard just as the square waves began collapsing into ordinary breakers. The sea gradually settled, and the harbor lights shone steadily again. Mara looked at her photographs, then deleted the closest ones. She knew the strange beauty had nearly hidden a disaster. She never forgot that lesson, and from then on, she admired the ocean from a safe distance on the cliff.
