Damon lowered the phone slowly, his mother’s panicked voice still echoing from the speaker. For once, he had no polished explanation ready. He tried telling my father that everyone was overreacting, that it was only a car and family should help one another. My father remained calm. He explained that the Honda was legally titled in my name, that Damon had taken it without permission and transferred it to his mother, and that his attorney had already identified the consequences. The word “conversion” changed the atmosphere.
Then my father revealed something I had never understood. For two years, my salary had become “our money,” my savings had become “family resources,” and even my wedding ring and paychecks had somehow become Damon’s to control.
