A Second Wife Doesn’t Get to Sit on a Family Home

Ellen studied the two versions of Raymond’s instructions while Priya remained quietly across the desk. One document would permanently reduce Bennett and Marion’s inheritance after Ellen’s lifetime, honoring a provision Raymond had prepared but never expected to use. The other simply enforced the recorded life estate, stopped the threatened eviction, and preserved the eventual inheritance exactly as Raymond had originally planned. Ellen remembered Marion crying beside her after the funeral, then turning away only weeks later. She chose mercy over revenge and asked Priya to file only the narrower document.

By that afternoon, the notice had been served. The recorded life estate remained fully effective, preventing Bennett from listing or selling the home or demanding that Ellen leave. Deputies ordered the moving truck away before a single box was loaded. As Ellen prepared to leave the office, Priya unlocked Raymond’s file cabinet and removed a sealed envelope. “He told me this stays closed,” she said softly, “unless someone ever tries to force you from your home.”
