Margaret had spent years opening her home whenever her family asked. Birthday parties, holiday dinners, graduation celebrations, and weekend barbecues always seemed to happen under her roof because everyone assumed she would say yes. At first she enjoyed bringing everyone together, but over time the requests became expectations. Her son David and his wife Chloe rarely asked if she was available anymore. They simply informed her when guests would arrive and expected her to clean, shop, cook, and quietly disappear into the background while everyone else celebrated. When Chloe announced she had invited thirty people for little Leo’s birthday despite Margaret clearly refusing, Margaret realized something had changed. This was no longer about helping family. Instead of spending Friday preparing for guests, Margaret made three quiet decisions. She hired a locksmith to replace every lock, asked her trusted neighbor Dorothy to keep an eye on the property, and called the local police to explain the situation in case someone attempted to enter without permission. Then she packed a small overnight bag and checked into a peaceful bed-and-breakfast several towns away, determined to enjoy the weekend she had planned for herself. Saturday afternoon arrived exactly as she expected. Chloe pulled into the driveway with decorations, trays of food, balloons, and dozens of excited guests.
