Deaf hiker fell 700 feet, but when rescuers finally found her, she wasn’t alone

Amelia Milling, a 21-year-old hiker, loves being outdoors and is an experienced trekker. But during one of her recent adventures, things took a dangerous turn.

While climbing a snowy mountain, one of her trekking poles suddenly snapped. She lost her balance and fell nearly 300 feet down the slope, hitting a boulder before tumbling another 400 feet further.

Miraculously, Amelia survived the terrifying fall with only an injured leg. Though shaken, she knew she had to figure out a way to make it back to safety.

As she gathered herself, Amelia spotted a large white animal nearby. At first, she panicked, thinking it was a wolf. But to her relief, it was actually a husky with a collar around its neck.

The dog’s name was Nanook, and he wasn’t just any husky—he was a specially trained trail guide dog known for helping lost hikers. Amelia immediately felt safer with him by her side.

The pair continued on the trail together until they came to a river crossing. The current was strong, and Amelia was quickly pulled under the rushing water. Just as things looked dire, Nanook grabbed hold of her backpack and pulled her out.

Exhausted but alive, Amelia used her SPOT beacon, a GPS device that sends alerts to rescuers. Before long, a team was able to track her exact location and bring her and Nanook to safety.

Amelia later called Nanook her “real-life hero.” The loyal husky never left her side, and even saved her from drowning. To thank him, Amelia treated him to some snacks and shared her gratitude for meeting such a brave companion.
