Details Released in Deaths of Two Hunters in Colorado

Authorities in Colorado confirmed that two missing hunters were killed by a lightning strike during an elk hunting trip in the Rio Grande National Forest. Conejos County Coroner Richard Martin said preliminary findings show both men, Andrew Porter and Ian Stasko, age 25, were struck by a powerful electrical bolt.

Martin explained that their injuries were consistent with “a pretty intense electrical jolt,” including small burn marks commonly seen in lightning-related cases. Final autopsy results are expected within eight weeks to officially confirm the cause and manner of death.

The men were last heard from on September 11 and were reported missing on September 13 when they failed to return from the Rio de Los Pinos Trailhead. Their vehicle was later found, still packed with camping gear and backpacks, raising alarms about their whereabouts.

Search efforts intensified as heavy rains and rough mountain weather swept the area. Air crews, drones, dog teams, and dozens of local volunteers joined the mission. After nearly a week of searching, both bodies were discovered on September 18.

Family members had remained hopeful throughout the ordeal. Porter’s fiancée, Bridget Murphy, shared that he had been sending updates regularly until his final message before the storm. The couple had been planning their wedding in the coming months.

Loved ones described both Porter and Stasko as skilled outdoorsmen who were well prepared for the trip. However, officials noted that unpredictable mountain conditions can prove deadly even for experienced adventurers.

The news brought heartbreak to both families, who are now leaning on their communities for support. Friends and neighbors recalled the men’s adventurous spirits and dedication to their loved ones.

A GoFundMe page created by Porter’s aunt has begun raising donations, asking for continued prayers as the families grieve and prepare for memorial services.
