House Speaker Mike Johnson is backing former President Donald Trump’s proposal to hold a presidential-style Republican National Convention ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Johnson revealed during a Fox News interview that Trump called him directly with the idea, which is designed to energize the Republican base and build enthusiasm for the GOP heading into a critical election year. Johnson called the proposed event a “great rallying point” and said it would help highlight the party’s accomplishments since the 2024 election.
Trump introduced the idea in a Truth Social post, praising the GOP’s momentum and financial strength as key indicators of the party’s rising influence. He described Republicans as “fixing” the damage done by the Biden administration and said a national convention ahead of the midterms would be unlike anything done before. Trump suggested that the unprecedented timing could give Republicans a powerful platform to unify and strategize.
