Donald Trump just broke major ‘royal protocol’ and King Charles might not be happy about it

Donald Trump and wife Melania drew attention during their UK state visit on September 17, when questions arose about whether they had broken royal protocol. The couple arrived late to Windsor Castle, leaving Prince William and Kate Middleton waiting for their arrival.

The Trumps were scheduled to meet the royals at noon. Instead, Marine One touched down at 12:16 p.m., after King Charles III and Queen Camilla were already in place. The delay immediately sparked speculation, given that punctuality is a long-standing expectation in royal traditions.

While breaches of protocol carry no formal consequences, etiquette usually encourages timely arrival, respectful bows or curtsies, and the use of formal greetings such as “Your Majesty.” Deviations are often scrutinized closely during high-profile visits.

Observers noted that King Charles is particularly sensitive to delays. During his coronation last year, he was caught on camera muttering in frustration when events fell behind schedule. His reputation for impatience made Trump’s late arrival even more notable.

After greeting the royal family, the Trumps joined a ceremonial carriage procession. The elaborate display featured 1,300 military personnel and 120 horses, underscoring the grandeur of a state occasion despite the rocky start.

Queen Camilla’s presence added significance to the event. Despite ongoing concerns about her health, she accompanied the king throughout the ceremonies, signaling the importance of continuity and formality.

The day’s program included Trump inspecting a guard of honour, attending a state lunch, and later laying a wreath in tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II. Each element of the itinerary was designed to reinforce the symbolism of shared history between the two nations.

Though the visit continued smoothly after the delay, the late arrival ensured that discussions about royal protocol—and whether Trump respected it—remained a dominant theme of the day.
