Oklahoma Republican Sen. Markwayne Mullin expressed optimism that the federal government shutdown could end this week as Democrats look for an “exit ramp.” During a Fox News interview with Kellyanne Conway, Mullin predicted the government could reopen Wednesday or Thursday following Tuesday’s elections. “After the election, they’re going to come out… look for an exit ramp because they know they lose,” he said, referring to races including the New York City mayoral race and gubernatorial contests in New Jersey and Virginia. Mullin suggested Democrats are cautious not to act before Election Day, warning that their base may perceive it as caving under pressure, potentially affecting voter turnout. He estimated that negotiations would resume afterward, with the government reopening midweek.
Mullin criticized Democrats for using the shutdown as leverage, referencing statements from congressional leaders such as Chuck Schumer and Bernie Sanders. “Even Bernie Sanders goes out and says they can’t open it back up because they lose leverage, but they also know that need to exit ramps,” he said. Mullin argued that Democrats’ approach was politically motivated, aiming to spin the outcome against President Trump and Republicans, while ultimately preparing to end the shutdown after key elections. He emphasized that the public has already been exposed to the political maneuvering, which he believes undermines the Democratic position.
Meanwhile, labor leaders urged an immediate end to the shutdown, highlighting its real-world impact. Teamsters President Sean O’Brien, joined by Vice President JD Vance and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, called on Congress to pass a clean continuing resolution. O’Brien emphasized the strain on working families, noting the shutdown affects paychecks, mortgage payments, tuition, and even children’s activities. The shutdown, now entering its second month, has paused SNAP benefits and stretched air traffic control staffing, creating widespread disruption. O’Brien stressed that negotiations should prioritize families and workers over political leverage, urging lawmakers to reopen the government without further delay.
