Speaker Johnson: Trump ‘Desperate’ For Govt. To Reopen As Dems Set to Cave

On this week’s broadcast of Fox News Channel’s Fox News Sunday, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said President Donald Trump was “eager” and “determined” to reopen the federal government as soon as possible. Anchor Shannon Bream questioned Johnson about Trump’s recent social media posts urging Senate Republicans to eliminate the filibuster to overcome Democratic opposition. Johnson responded that while many senators in both parties have resisted such a move in the past, Trump’s frustration stems from his inability to end the shutdown despite multiple attempts to negotiate. “He is a big-hearted president,” Johnson said. “He wants everybody to get their services — health care for veterans, SNAP benefits, and all the rest. He’s tried everything he can, and he’s just desperate for the government to open.”

Johnson emphasized that the president’s fiery rhetoric reflects the broader Republican frustration with Democrats, whom he accused of “digging in their heels.” He added that Trump’s efforts to compromise have been repeatedly rejected, leaving federal workers and ordinary Americans caught in the crossfire of partisan gridlock. “This is a reflection of all of our desperation,” Johnson said. “We’re angry about it. I think we should be.” The Speaker’s comments projected unity with the White House while signaling that patience among Republicans is wearing thin as the shutdown enters another week. Johnson maintained that Democrats must come back to the table rather than “holding the government hostage” for political leverage.

Meanwhile, on CBS’s Face the Nation, Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) expressed optimism that the shutdown could end this week now that Trump has returned from his trip to Asia. Warner declined to specify where Democrats might compromise but urged Trump to “put America first” and resume direct negotiations. “We knew this wasn’t going to end unless Donald Trump was back in the country,” Warner said. “He’s got to sit down with us and deal with this. It can be done in an hour.”
