Federal Judge ‘Disqualifies’ MAGA Prosecutor in L.A. – But It Won’t Change a Thing

When Bill Essayli was appointed as U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California earlier this year, conservatives saw it as a turning point — a signal that someone was finally willing to clean up corruption in one of America’s most powerful regions. A former California Assemblyman and federal prosecutor, Essayli built his reputation on taking on entrenched interests and refusing to back down. That mission hit a legal snag this week when Judge J. Michael Seabright of the U.S. District Court in Hawaii ruled that Essayli’s appointment had expired under the 120-day limit for acting U.S. Attorneys, declaring his continued service “unlawful” without Senate confirmation. The decision briefly threw the nation’s largest judicial district — covering Los Angeles and surrounding counties — into uncertainty.

Essayli, however, remains defiant. Calling the order a “temporary political distraction,” he vowed to continue targeting corruption, trafficking, and cartel networks. Supporters argue the ruling is more political than procedural, noting Seabright’s ties to Obama-era cases. Legal experts say the administration’s formal nomination of Essayli earlier this month likely allows him to stay on while awaiting Senate confirmation. “This ruling doesn’t remove him from the building,” said analyst Rachel Hernandez. “It’s mostly symbolic.” The Trump administration is standing by him. White House Press Secretary Katrina Pierson called the issue “a procedural hiccup,” while Senate allies work to fast-track his confirmation.

To critics, Essayli embodies an aggressive brand of law enforcement they’ve sought to curb; to supporters, he’s restoring order to a state long resistant to federal authority. Essayli remains unfazed: “I didn’t take this job to win popularity contests. I took it to enforce the law.” Whether labeled unlawful or not, his message is clear — the fight against California corruption isn’t over.
