I immediately asked my daughter what photograph she was talking about. She explained that Ethan had discovered an old picture of his mother, Claire, holding him as a newborn. Claire had died when Ethan was only three years old, and he remembered very little about her. I had carefully preserved everything she left behind, including photographs, handwritten notes, and birthday cards. But there was one particular photograph I had never shown him. It showed Claire sitting in a hospital bed, holding a small envelope addressed to her future son.
My daughter explained that Ethan had found the envelope hidden behind the photograph. Inside was a handwritten message bearing Claire’s signature. I remembered that letter immediately. Claire had given it to me shortly before she died, asking me to keep it safe until Ethan became an adult. I had completely forgotten it was inside the album. My daughter then told me something else. Ethan hadn’t simply become emotional after reading it. He had started asking questions about his father, questions I had avoided answering for fifteen years.
