When Linda’s son, Daniel, announced that his wife, Ashley, was pregnant, Linda cried with happiness. She had dreamed of becoming a grandmother for years and immediately began imagining the little moments she would share with her first grandchild. But Ashley didn’t share her excitement. She remained distant, excluded Linda from the baby shower, and even announced publicly that only “real family” would be allowed in the delivery room. Linda swallowed her disappointment and continued knitting a beautiful blanket in white and pale yellow, hoping one day her grandchild would use it.
Two weeks later, Daniel traveled to Denver for a work conference. Ashley was only thirty-three weeks pregnant when labor suddenly began. A snowstorm stranded Daniel hundreds of miles away, leaving Ashley frightened and alone at the hospital. Her mother arrived but quickly became intoxicated, screamed at medical staff, and was eventually escorted out by security. With nobody else to turn to, Ashley picked up her phone and called the one person she had repeatedly pushed away. “Linda, please. I need you.”
