My sister started crying. She admitted that Daniel had convinced her I was trying to take control of the family gathering. He had told her that I wanted recognition for my financial contribution and intended to embarrass her in front of everyone. Instead of speaking directly to me, she believed his accusations. Worse, she had already decided to exclude us before we even began our journey.
My aunt wasn’t finished. She revealed that Daniel had also been telling relatives that my contribution was a gift to my sister, not money intended for shared expenses. I looked at my sister and asked whether she had ever planned to repay me. She couldn’t answer. I finally understood how easily family loyalty had been used against me. But I still had one decision to make.
