My Husband’s Mistress Paid Me to Clean Her House Without Knowing Who I Was7

Evelyn delivered one important piece of relief: the proposed sale of my house would not proceed on the disputed authorization. Robert’s attorney later suggested selling the property and dividing the proceeds, but I refused to agree simply because Robert wanted money. I demanded copies of every document supposedly carrying my signature. For the first time in twenty-eight years, I was making decisions without seeking my husband’s approval. My marriage was collapsing, but my independence was finally beginning to return.

One afternoon, Emily rushed into Aunt Ruth’s kitchen and told us to turn on the television. A local reporter stood outside a storage facility near Owensboro. Investigators were reviewing newly obtained records connected to Rebecca Sloan’s disappearance. No arrests had been announced, and police had not publicly identified any suspects. Then the broadcast revealed that authorities were also seeking information about Thomas Delaney, Diane’s husband, who had disappeared twenty-two years earlier. Soon Emily received a call: an old inventory record had been found for a safety deposit box associated with Thomas. It contained envelopes, a small leather notebook, and a sealed package intended for one particular person. Emily hesitated before revealing the name written on it.

“Margaret Lawson,” she whispered. I stood motionless. Twenty-two years earlier, I had been married to Robert for only a few years. I had never known Thomas Delaney, and I couldn’t imagine why anyone would leave something for me. Emily began crying, then said her mother had discovered another disturbing detail. I gripped the kitchen counter, waiting for her explanation. Whatever that package contained, it might finally explain why my name had appeared in a mystery that began long before I found Robert’s blue shirts.
