Rebecca explained that several complaints against Richard had mysteriously disappeared. The following morning, my son Daniel visited my cottage. His fiancée, Vanessa, wanted me to apologize for embarrassing her father. I asked Daniel whether he thought I had done anything wrong. He admitted Richard had acted like a bully but insisted he loved Vanessa. I reminded him that loving someone didn’t mean accepting disrespect toward others.
Later, Rebecca revealed that Richard’s division had reported record profits while employee turnover had nearly doubled. Five workers had complained about humiliation, retaliation, or unfair treatment. Three resigned, and another was transferred to a lower-paying position. The human resources director responsible for dismissing their complaints had been appointed by Richard. Even worse, a former employee alleged that Richard had ordered financial reports altered. I authorized an independent investigation. Then Vanessa visited, advising me to hide my supposed financial struggles from her wealthy friends. Her words confirmed that neither she nor her father understood the dignity of ordinary workers.
