Eventually, the mystery began to unravel. After all the staring, photographing, and guessing, the object finally became recognizable. It wasn’t an animal, an insect, or anything poisonous. There was no hidden creature waiting beneath the blanket, and nothing unnatural had entered the room. The frightening object that had kept me frozen in bed was actually something much more ordinary than anyone had imagined. It was a dried piece of cooked chicken that had somehow ended up on the bed.
For a moment, the simplicity of the explanation was almost unbelievable. All that fear, all those terrifying possibilities, and all the confusion had come from a forgotten piece of food. The strange pressure against my back suddenly had a perfectly ordinary explanation. The mystery that had seemed so serious only minutes earlier was over. My family could finally stop examining the object as though it were some mysterious discovery. And I could finally relax, knowing that nothing dangerous had been hiding beneath my blanket. The relief was immediate, but so was the embarrassment.
