The following morning, Emily arrived at the restaurant. Daniel handed her the final letter, which contained Michael’s current address. He was living in another state and had spent years believing his sister wanted nothing to do with him. Emily immediately called him. When he answered, she could barely speak. “It’s me,” she whispered. “I’m sorry.” There was silence, followed by a man’s trembling voice. “I’ve waited years to hear that.” Two weeks later, they reunited at the restaurant, embracing beside the old photographs of their father.
I eventually received a replacement pizza, but that wasn’t what I remembered most. Their family restaurant became busier, and Daniel later told me the siblings were working together again. I still occasionally notice tiny bubbles on melted cheese, and they always make me smile. Sometimes, the smallest and strangest things lead to the biggest discoveries. I had ordered dinner because I was exhausted. Instead, I accidentally helped two people find their way back to each other. And all it took was one very unusual pizza. The end.
