A 12-Year-Old Paid Me Cash for a Haircut Every Three Weeks and Always Asked Me to Hide the Same Spot6

There is something I wish I had understood earlier: a child can be frightened of hurting the people who love her. Clemency wasn’t hiding the patch because she thought her mother would punish her. She was hiding it because she thought her mother would be upset, and she had decided that protecting her was her responsibility.

That is a heavy thing for a twelve-year-old to carry. She had turned a haircut into a way of being seen without having to speak. I had turned my silence into an excuse to avoid a difficult conversation.

Now, when she comes in, the appointment feels different. She still arrives with her fourteen dollars, still sits in the same chair, and still trusts me with her hair. But she no longer asks me to disguise anything. Her mother sits nearby, paying attention.

I can see the new hair growing in. It is not a dramatic transformation, and there is still a long road ahead. But the change is real, and so is the fact that Clemency doesn’t have to face it alone anymore.
