The Sunday I Smiled At My Daughter-In-Law’s Cruel Joke, Said Nothing While Her Wealthy Friends Laughed, And Waited For The Quiet Man With The Tray To Say What I Had Hidden For Almost Forty Years2

Celeste greeted me near the entrance, loudly announcing my arrival before guiding me around the clubhouse. Lottie immediately appeared and handed me an orange popsicle. As we walked, Celeste mentioned the expensive membership fees, apparently expecting me to be impressed. I noticed things she overlooked: an incorrect linen delivery schedule, damaged woodwork, and a dining-room arrangement that violated the fire-code plan. Celeste smiled politely, assuming he was simply being friendly.

It’s a whole story, I’ll tell you later.” One woman laughed, while another looked uncomfortable. I said nothing. But Adrian had heard every word. He placed his tray down, causing two glasses to rattle, and walked directly toward us. Celeste was still talking when she noticed everyone watching him approach. His expression was serious, and his next words made her smile disappear.
