My Husband’s Brothers Offered Me $500,000 to Leave the Farm, So I Bought 80 Acres Across the Road

Randy slid an envelope across the table, stopping it beside my plate of untouched food. “It’s the buyout,” he whispered. “Five hundred thousand dollars. We had everything arranged with the bank.” I was sitting in the basement of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Blue Hill, Nebraska, surrounded by folding tables, funeral food, and relatives who had gathered to remember my husband. He had been dead for only six days. Inside the envelope was a cashier’s check made out to me. My other brother-in-law, Scott, cleared his throat and explained that the farmhouse belonged to the family partnership. They wanted me out before planting season, which meant I had roughly seven weeks to pack up twenty years of my life.

I looked across the room at my twelve-year-old daughter, Abby. She was sitting beside my sister, pushing a lemon bar around her plate with a plastic fork. She hadn’t cried during the funeral, and I knew she was still trying to understand why her father wasn’t coming home. I didn’t feel angry when I heard their offer. I was simply exhausted. I folded the envelope, placed it in my purse, and quietly said, “All right.” Randy immediately looked relieved. He told me they believed a clean break would be easier, without the stress of managing the farm or worrying about the bank. I nodded, then walked over to sit beside Abby. At that moment, I had no idea that accepting their check would eventually lead me to build something they never expected.
