An Army Sergeant Mocked an 81-Year-Old Woman Eating Alone—Then She Asked Him to Read the Wall Behind Him 6

The following week, I received a phone call from the base commander. He apologized for the way I had been treated and explained that the incident had been reviewed. Reese had been formally counseled about his conduct and reminded of the standards expected from someone in his position. The commander also asked whether I would consider speaking to a group of young soldiers about leadership and respect. At first, I hesitated. Then I explained that leadership wasn’t measured by how loudly someone could give an order. It was measured by how they treated people who couldn’t give them anything in return. Reese was sitting near the back. When our eyes met, he stood and apologized in front of everyone. This time, his words sounded different. He wasn’t apologizing because he had discovered my rank. He was apologizing because he finally understood his behavior had been wrong.
