My Husband Filed for Divorce After Our Lottery Win but Never Checked the Back of the Ticket 2

The lottery office continued its investigation while Gary grew increasingly angry. He insisted that being married automatically entitled him to the entire prize, but my attorney explained that the question was more complicated than he wanted to believe. The ticket’s purchase history and my signature were important pieces of evidence, although neither automatically settled every legal issue. Meanwhile, the financial records revealed just how carefully Gary had prepared for a life without me. For years, he had told me we couldn’t afford home repairs, vacations, or small comforts. I had accepted those explanations because I believed we were working toward the same future. Now I discovered that he had been quietly building a financial cushion for himself while allowing me to believe our finances were shared honestly.

The unsent letter hurt even more than the secret account. Gary described his intention to leave our marriage and start over, revealing that his decision had been made months before the lottery drawing. The money hadn’t destroyed our relationship. It had exposed what was already broken. When Gary realized the investigation might not go his way, he began calling me in tears. He reminded me of our thirty-four years together and begged me not to throw everything away over money. I listened before asking one question: “If that ticket had been worth two dollars instead of $2.4 million, would you still have filed for divorce?” Gary said nothing. His silence told me more than another argument ever could. I stopped trying to rescue a marriage he had already abandoned in his heart.
