Mike Johnson Confirms Trump’s Plan for a 2026 Midterm GOP Convention
House Speaker Mike Johnson has confirmed that former President Donald Trump’s proposal for a Republican Party convention ahead of the 2026 midterm elections is moving toward reality. Speaking at a press briefing, Johnson described his recent phone call with Trump, calling the idea “genius” and potentially historic. “Trump called me and said, ‘Mike, I got a great idea — how about a midterm convention?’” Johnson recalled. “It’s never been done before, and it would be a great rallying point before the election. It would build momentum, highlight our achievements, and celebrate what the Republican Party has accomplished.” Johnson said Trump plans to coordinate with Senate Majority Leader John Thune and RNC Chairman Joe Gruters to finalize details, adding, “I think everybody’s on board. I can’t wait. We have so much to celebrate.”
Traditionally, national conventions are held only in presidential election years, but Trump’s proposal aims to energize the GOP base, unify messaging, and spotlight legislative successes since his 2024 victory. Republicans view the midterm convention as a strategic counterweight to Democrats, who are also considering similar events. “If Democrats want to put their record on display — chaos, inflation, border failures — go ahead,” Johnson said. “We’ll be ready.”
The GOP currently controls both chambers of Congress but faces historical headwinds, as ruling parties often lose seats in midterms. Johnson believes the convention could help defy that trend by rallying voters and projecting unity. “It’s about getting everyone on the same page and laying out a bold agenda for the future,” he said. For Trump, it’s another chance to blend political showmanship with strategy. As Johnson concluded, “We’ve got the ideas, we’ve got the energy, and now we’ll have the convention — proof that the Republican Party is ready to lead America forward.”
