A Couple Left Me With A 400 Dinner Bill Until What They Forgot Changed Everything 7

“I knew you were somewhere,” my mother whispered. “I just couldn’t remember the way back to you.” I cried against her shoulder, unable to believe that after four months of unanswered questions, she was finally there in front of me. I took the ring from its plastic bag and gently returned it to her finger. It was too loose now, but she curled her fingers around mine to keep it from slipping away. “Take me home, Laura,” she said. I promised her I would. Behind me, Margaret cried while Thomas held her close. I finally understood that they hadn’t taken my mother from me. They had protected her when she was frightened, lost, and unable to find her way home.

My mother returned home three weeks later, and her memory slowly began to improve. Some days were difficult, and the doctors warned us that certain memories might never return. We still don’t know exactly what happened the day she disappeared, but I no longer spend every morning wondering whether I will ever see her again. She calls me every Sunday at eight o’clock, never a minute late. Margaret and Thomas now join us for dinner once a month, and my mother always saves Margaret a seat beside her. Sometimes I think about the $407.63 I lost that night and the tears I cried in the parking lot. If the couple had simply paid their bill, I might never have found the ring or discovered where my mother was. What felt like the worst night of my life became the night that brought her home.
