Mamdani Referred to DOJ For Criminal Charges Over Alleged Foreign Donations

New York City mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani is facing two criminal referrals filed by the Coolidge Reagan Foundation, alleging he accepted illegal campaign contributions from foreign donors. The referrals were submitted to the Department of Justice and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, claiming potential violations of the Federal Election Campaign Act and New York Election Code. Reports indicate Mamdani’s campaign collected nearly $13,000 from at least 170 donors abroad, including one from his mother-in-law in Dubai. The watchdog group accused Mamdani of a “sustained pattern” of foreign donations and a “systematic failure to comply” with campaign finance laws.

Under federal and state law, it is illegal for foreign nationals to contribute to U.S. elections, and violations can result in fines or imprisonment. While Mamdani’s campaign has refunded some disputed contributions, records suggest 88 donations totaling $7,190 remain unreturned. Campaign spokesperson Dora Pekec defended Mamdani, stating some contributions came from U.S. citizens living overseas, which is legal. She also emphasized the campaign’s compliance procedures to verify donor eligibility and promised refunds for any impermissible donations. The campaign has raised approximately $4 million privately and received $12.7 million in public matching funds, maintaining about $6.1 million in cash on hand with less than a month to go before Election Day.

Mamdani, an avowed socialist, remains a frontrunner in polls, leading opponents including former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa. The controversy has attracted political attention, with Rep. Elise Stefanik criticizing Gov. Kathy Hochul for endorsing Mamdani and highlighting his past connections to controversial figures, including Siraj Wahhaj, associated with the 1993 World Trade Center bombing investigation. The allegations raise broader questions about campaign finance compliance and election integrity, though the legal outcomes remain uncertain as investigations by federal and local authorities proceed.
