I Went Into A Pawnshop To Buy A Cheap Toaster On My Way Home Tuesday

Ruth Ellen Mayer never expected a simple trip to a pawnshop to change her life. She had gone inside looking for a cheap toaster when she noticed a familiar locket behind the glass counter. It belonged to Jimmy Cole, the young man she had loved back in 1982. Her hands trembled as she recognized it, and she immediately asked the clerk where it had come from. After speaking with Dewey, she learned the address of Jimmy’s brother, Wendell Cole. Carrying the locket’s memory in her heart, Ruth drove toward Route 79, praying she might finally discover what had happened to Jimmy.

For decades, she had believed Jimmy had abandoned her and left town with another girl from Quincy. She pulled an old hospital wristband from her purse, hoping it might explain something. But as Wendell stared at it, his face slowly changed, and Ruth realized the truth was far worse than she had imagined.
