I Cleaned an Elderly Woman’s House for 26 Years, but After Her Funeral, Her Son Fired Me and Handed Me $300 7

I placed Henrietta’s napkin on the wall and framed the three-hundred-dollar check, too. The check that had first felt like an insult became a reminder of the strange way the truth had reached me. Carlton had risked his brothers’ anger to help protect his mother’s final wishes, and I finally understood why he had acted so coldly at the door. He had needed them to believe I was leaving with nothing. Beneath the check, I kept a small photograph of Henrietta smiling beside the farmhouse. Whenever I looked at it, I remembered our Friday mornings, our coffee, and the kindness she had shown me.

Every Friday, I still make coffee and biscuits. I sit at the table where Henrietta and I once shared our conversations, looking out toward the pecan trees. Sometimes I imagine her sitting across from me, telling me not to worry about tomorrow. The land has given me security, but the greatest gift was something money could never measure. Henrietta restored my family’s history, returned our dignity, and made sure my name was written correctly on the deed. I spent twenty-six years cleaning her house, never expecting anything in return. Now, when people ask why I refused to sell, I smile and say, “The dirt will wait. I won’t.”
