When I called my mother, she listened without interrupting. I told her about the phone call, the community center, the little girl, and everything my former classmate had built. For several seconds, there was silence on the line. Then my mother quietly said, “We never know how far a little kindness can travel.” I could hear the emotion in her voice. She remembered those mornings when she packed the extra food, but she had never considered them especially important. To her, helping someone who was hungry had simply been the right thing to do.
I told her that our former classmate wanted her to know what those lunches had meant. My mother became quiet again, then laughed softly. “Tell her I’m proud of her,” she said. “She took something difficult and turned it into something good.” After we ended the call, I sat for a while thinking about how strange life can be. Twelve years earlier, I had believed I was simply sharing food with another child. I had no idea that those lunches would eventually help inspire an entire community program. But there was still one more thing my former classmate wanted me to see. The next morning, she sent me a photograph that brought tears to my eyes.
