Rowan and I decided to try rebuilding our marriage slowly. We started with small things, like sharing dinner after Isla fell asleep and talking about our days without arguing. One evening, he suggested going out for our first family dinner since the test results arrived. I hesitated, worried that pretending everything was normal would only hide our problems. He assured me he didn’t expect forgiveness overnight. He simply wanted to show me that he was willing to work for our family. Eventually, I agreed, and watching him carry Isla’s diaper bag made me smile for the first time in weeks.
During dinner, we revived an old tradition from the beginning of our relationship: each of us would share the highlight of the day. Rowan said his favorite moment had been hearing Isla make a tiny sound while sleeping against his chest. Mine was watching him comfort her when she cried. For a little while, we felt like ourselves again. But I knew healing required more than pleasant evenings. I asked Rowan to promise that he would speak to me whenever fear or doubt troubled him, rather than making accusations. He agreed, understanding that trust was something we had to protect together.
