When the results finally arrived, Rowan came to my apartment with his mother beside him. His hands trembled as he opened the envelope. I watched his face change while he read the report. Isla was his daughter. There had never been another man, another relationship, or anything I needed to confess. Our little girl had simply inherited unexpected features. Rowan looked at me, his eyes filling with tears. “I’m sorry. I never should have doubted you.” I wanted to feel relieved, but the pain of his accusation was still fresh.
“You didn’t just question her paternity,” I told him. “You questioned my honesty when I needed you most.” Rowan admitted that fear and ignorance had taken control of him. He had convinced himself that different eye and hair colors meant something terrible had happened. I explained that genetics could produce surprising combinations, even when parents shared similar features. He listened without defending himself. I could see that he regretted what he had done, but an apology couldn’t immediately repair the damage. I told him he would need to earn back my trust through his actions, not just his words.
