Sherry eventually returned with a folder of receipts and explanations. She claimed she had been protecting Daddy by managing everything herself. After more questions, she admitted that some rental income had gone toward personal expenses, promising herself she would replace it later. She insisted she had never intended to hurt anyone. Daddy listened without interrupting, but he refused to treat promises as proof. The accountant continued reviewing the records to determine exactly how much money had been spent and where it had gone.
Daddy also contacted an attorney to review his power of attorney and make sure his financial decisions were handled according to his wishes. He arranged for the nursing home to communicate directly with him and the person he designated. Sherry cried, saying she was still his daughter and had only made mistakes. Daddy looked at her sadly. “I love you, Sherry, but that doesn’t mean I stop asking where my money went.” His words were quiet, yet nobody in the room could misunderstand them.
