Lauren placed her folder in front of Garrett. Inside was a divorce petition and a court order freezing the account where he’d hidden his money. For once, Garrett had nothing to say. He simply stared at the fountain pen he’d expected me to use against myself. Phyllis desperately called everything a misunderstanding, but nobody believed her anymore. I thanked her for lunch, stood up, and walked away with Lauren—and, unexpectedly, Sierra beside me. In the driveway, Sierra squeezed my hand. We had both been deceived by the same man, but she had chosen to expose the truth rather than profit from my destruction.
Three weeks later, my daughter Rose arrived healthy, loud, and perfect. Lauren was the first person to hold her after me. The divorce ultimately left me with my apartment, child support, and repayment of the money Garrett had taken from our accounts. Sierra gave birth to her son the following spring. We aren’t exactly friends, but our children will grow up knowing each other without carrying the lies their father created. And eventually, I bought the crib I’d wanted from the beginning—with my own money and nobody’s permission. Above it hangs the advice my mother once gave me, framed where Rose will someday see it. Garrett almost convinced me that protecting my home made me selfish. Instead, refusing one signature protected my daughter’s future.
