My Husband Was Recovering From a Stroke When My Son Painted Our 100-Year-Old Red Barn Gray, So I Bought 40 Gallons of Paint

Carol Jensen was fifty-eight when she finally came home after spending eleven exhausting days beside her husband, Arlo, in the hospital. His stroke had left him struggling to speak and unable to move his right hand properly. Carol had barely slept, spending every moment she could at his bedside and worrying about what their future would look like. When she turned onto the family farm one September evening, she expected the familiar sight that had comforted her for decades. Instead, she stopped the car and stared. The enormous red barn built in 1925 had been painted completely gray.

Every door, wooden board, and even the small window where the barn cats slept had lost its familiar color. Carol walked around the building with a flashlight, trying to understand what had happened. Then she noticed something even more painful. The crooked initials Arlo’s father had painted above the haymow door in 1958 were gone beneath the gray paint. She immediately knew someone had done this without asking her. The next morning, Carol learned that her son Brad, a real estate agent, had arranged the work while she was at the hospital. He said he was preparing the property for a possible sale. Carol stared at the gray barn and quietly decided she would restore it herself.
