Dad opened the folder while our relatives crowded around him. First came my spreadsheet and four years of receipts. Beneath them was the bank notice: the mortgage was five months behind, and foreclosure proceedings could begin if the balance wasn’t paid. I’d known for four weeks. I could have rescued him quietly again, but after he’d called me a parasite while I was paying for his household, I needed the truth spoken aloud.
My aunt finally asked where the mortgage money had gone. Dad broke. Eighteen months earlier, he’d invested his retirement savings in a friend’s trucking business. The friend disappeared with the money. Too ashamed to admit he’d lost everything, Dad created another story—he pretended he was financially supporting me because it allowed him to keep feeling like the provider. Mom admitted she’d known but stayed silent because he’d begged her. Then Dad looked around the kitchen and finally said the words everyone needed to hear: “Megan wasn’t living off me. I was living off her.”
