My Son Told Me In The Family Group Chat I Was No Longer Invited3

I didn’t cancel the notice. In January, I sold the Santa Barbara beach house and placed the proceeds into education accounts for every grandchild. Russell and Tamara were offered the suburban house at a fair family price, and they bought it. Russell began counseling alone. Hazel called the day after learning the truth, crying as she apologized for believing Tamara’s story. I couldn’t recover those missing years, but at least everyone finally knew why I’d disappeared from a family I’d never chosen to leave.

That Christmas, I hosted dinner myself. Edith came, Philip brought his family, and Hazel drove four hours carrying a pie. Clarence’s chair remained at the head of the table. Halfway through dessert, the doorbell rang. Russell stood outside alone, holding a poinsettia. Tamara hadn’t come. He didn’t assume he could enter. He simply asked, “Mom, is there still room at the table?” I looked behind me at the people I’d finally gotten back. Then I opened the door wider and set another plate. After years of being deliberately excluded from my own family, I made sure nobody at my table was left out.
