Carter and Sadie listened silently while Helen explained everything. Finally, I walked down from the porch and unlocked the small side gate—but only for my children. Sadie immediately burst into tears, wrapped her arms around me, and apologized for blaming me. Carter stared at his father for several seconds before lifting his suitcase and following his sister inside. That night, he revealed one more painful truth: during the flight home, he’d read the messages on Preston’s phone and finally understood exactly what his father had been doing.
Kiara disappeared from Preston’s life before the first loan payment came due. He eventually moved into a rented condo across town and now sees Carter and Sadie every other weekend, when they choose to visit. His parents even mailed me an apology card. Our divorce became final that spring. These days, I still begin every morning drinking coffee from Sadie’s crooked handmade mug, sitting peacefully in the house my father protected years before I knew protection would ever be necessary. Preston thought he could mortgage my home, spend the money, and decide who belonged there. But my father had already made that decision—and this time, nobody was telling me to leave.
