That winter, Mom had bought Danny a red coat with her own grocery money and told him it was a loan, so he wouldn’t feel ashamed. He had insisted on writing the IOU. She also brought him a sandwich every day for the rest of the year. He moved away that summer, and they never saw each other again, but she kept that little paper in her wallet for decades. Danny was now a grown man with a daughter of his own.
The store manager arrived and pulled up the security footage while Danny stood there shaking. On the screen, Mom had slipped her reading glasses into her sweater pocket after checking an apple label. Nothing else. Danny turned to the crowd and said, loud enough for everyone to hear, that he had been wrong and that this woman was the most honest person he had ever known. The manager apologized too and offered Mom free groceries for a year. She politely declined.
