My husband left me for his supposedly pregnant mistress—and took our baby’s crib with him. “Buy a new one,” he said coldly. “We’re going to need this for our baby.” I stood inside the empty nursery after the front door closed, staring at the bare space where our child was supposed to sleep. That was when I finally cried. I couldn’t understand how someone who’d promised to build a family with me could walk away and take something meant for his own baby.

Then, last week, someone knocked on my door. When I opened it, I froze. Standing there was my husband’s stepmother. We’d never been close, so I couldn’t imagine why she’d come. Without asking to enter, she held out a banking card. My name was printed across the front. Then she looked toward her car and said, “There’s something else you need to know. His mistress isn’t pregnant.” Before I could respond, she opened her trunk.
