He Took Our Baby’s Crib for His Mistress Until His Stepmom Knocked With a Card3

I finally took the card. Then the two of us carried the crib upstairs together and returned it to the empty space in the nursery. She stayed while I put the sheets back on, smoothing one corner while I fixed the other. We’d never shared much during my marriage, but something changed in that room. She wasn’t asking me to forgive her stepson, defend his behavior, or pretend our family hadn’t been shattered. She was simply correcting what she could and refusing to finance his cruelty any longer.

That night, my phone started ringing. It was him. He’d discovered that he could no longer access the account, and judging from the repeated calls, he was furious. I didn’t answer once. Instead, I walked upstairs and stood in the nursery. The crib was exactly where it had been before he took it. The banking card rested safely inside the drawer beside the baby monitor. For the first time since he’d walked out, the room didn’t feel empty. He had taken the crib because he believed he could take whatever he wanted. His stepmother brought it back—and with it, she returned something far more important: the feeling that my baby and I would be okay without him.
