My Family Thought I Was Broke, So My Sister Hired Me As Her Personal Assistant3

Before dessert, I called Northstar Crest’s general counsel. Two weeks later, Lucas was arrested for embezzlement and securities fraud, and my firm recovered most of the missing money. I’d recused myself from Bianca’s original appointment, so the board independently decided to keep her as CEO under strict oversight after she agreed to cooperate fully. For once, my family finally understood how badly they’d misjudged both of us. Bianca wasn’t untouchable, Lucas wasn’t successful, and I certainly wasn’t the struggling sister they’d assumed could be pressured into signing whatever they placed in front of me.

My parents called repeatedly afterward. I answered once. Dad apologized for treating me like someone he could simply walk past, while Mom admitted she’d never asked what I actually did because she was afraid of discovering how wrong she’d been about me. Bianca filed for divorce in February. These days, she sends flowers on my birthday, and her assistant’s name isn’t Maren. As for the old Honda everyone had been embarrassed to see me driving? The morning after that dinner, I walked outside, climbed behind the wheel, and drove it straight out of their driveway—from the most visible spot out front. I never needed their approval to prove I’d succeeded. I only needed them to stop confusing appearances with worth.
