The Night Every Light Went Out Inside The Villa My Father Gave Away Without Asking3

The notary confessed within an hour, and Dad was charged with forgery and fraud. Investigators uncovered something even worse: the $160,000 I’d sent over the years had never paid creditors. It had financed Rochelle’s crossover, Garrett’s fishing boat, and Dad’s gambling debts. Disgusted by what he’d learned, Garrett agreed to testify while trying to keep his children away from the scandal. Only after the deputies had everything under control did I enter the security code from four hundred miles away. The steel shutters slowly lifted, flooding the villa with evening light.

A judge eventually ordered Dad to repay every dollar, and Rochelle sold her crossover to help cover the debt. Josephine mailed me an apology that I read once and kept. The next morning, I returned in uniform and entered the villa alone. Daniel’s photograph now hangs beside the window, facing the water he loved. For years, I’d served my country while allowing my own family to treat my loyalty like an unlimited bank account. That ended inside those locked walls. I still serve, but now I finally have something I’d almost forgotten how to protect: a home that belongs completely to me—and the only key hangs on my own ring.
