Marco sat down slowly, like his legs had given out. His hands were shaking the entire time. He told us everything. He was nineteen when Dana got pregnant. She ended things before Brielle was born and made him sign an agreement through her lawyer: he would pay child support, but he would never contact Brielle unless Brielle contacted him first. He kept that promise for twenty-six years, even though it broke him.
He never told me because he was ashamed, and because he believed the secret wasnโt his to share. When I opened that note, I thought my husband had abandoned his own child. Instead, he had been waiting for her to knock on his door. Brielle had been too nervous to say it out loud, so she brought him coffee every morning, just to hear his voice. Her mother had told her how he took his coffee. Two sugars, no cream. Dana had never forgotten.
