My Grandfather Walked Me Down The Aisle Because My Father Was No Longer With Us3

“Keep playing,” Grandpa told them. The wedding guests stayed while the venue manager escorted Brent and his friends away. Later that evening, wearing a borrowed sweatshirt instead of my wedding gown, I danced beneath the string lights with my eighty-four-year-old grandfather. It became the best moment of the entire day. As we moved slowly across the floor, Grandpa told me that my late father would have been even prouder of me then than he had been that morning. I realized the celebration hadn’t been ruined after all. I had simply discovered before it was too late exactly what kind of man I had nearly married.

A week later, Kyle deleted the video and sent me a long apology. Brent’s family returned every wedding gift with a note of their own. Brent and I never spoke again. I eventually had my wedding gown professionally cleaned and donated it to a charity that provides dresses to brides who cannot afford them. Grandpa still keeps the empty brown envelope that once held our marriage license inside his desk. Whenever anyone asks why, he smiles and says it was the greatest wedding present he ever gave. He didn’t give me something that day—he made sure I was free to walk away.
